Traffic knowledge course

The VKU focuses on the connection between theory and practice. You will learn useful things to help you navigate traffic with a car or motorbike. Important insights from recent accident research are also included. To make the course as relevant as possible for you, we use a lot of study and video material from the local area in the VKU in Zurich. This way, you will immediately get to know challenging traffic situations. However, the topics for the theory of traffic instruction are not freely selectable. The following course contents must be covered:

Traffic vision

The first double lesson is about recognizing typical traffic situations at an early stage and reacting correctly. We also learn what sensorimotor skills mean and how they can best be trained while driving.

Traffic dynamics

Everything here revolves around the vehicle and the forces involved in driving. The right speed in the various driving situations is crucial in road safety. Also the technical condition of the vehicle.

Traffic environment

The transport environment is about everything. what happens around the car. Pedestrians, bicycles, streets, weather and light conditions. We learn how to behave appropriately on the street.

Traffic tactics

Traffic tactics are about driving ability. What influence can drugs, alcohol and drugs have on driving? We also learn how to travel in the most environmentally friendly way possible. A DriveLab specialty.

About VKU English

Dario Lichtensteiger: Speaker for VKU in English

“With a lot of enthusiasm, I have been a driving instructor for 15 years. In my studies at the Lucerne University of Education, I already dedicated my master’s thesis to the development of driving competence. The focus of my work at that time was the influence of feedback on driving skills. I am looking forward to exploring the most successful learning methods with you in our driving laboratory (DriveLab) and to ignite the fire in you to learn something new. All this in fluent English and a humorous atmosphere”.

Frequently asked questions about VKU

When do I have to do the VKU?

It is best to take care of the VKU immediately after passing the theory test. Then you benefit from the VKU knowledge during the driver training and can apply it. You must have completed the course by the time you register for the exam at the latest. Since the VKU can no longer expire since January 1st, 2021, nothing speaks against attending the course early.

What does VKU mean?

VKU is the abbreviation for “Verkehrskundeunterricht” or in English: traffic education. As the name suggests, the theory lessons cover everything to do with behavior in traffic.

How long does the VKU course take?

With us, the VKU is done in two days. There are driving schools that spread the course over 4 days. The bottom line is that 8 hours must be attended. So two times four or four times two. Unfortunately, due to legal reasons, the course cannot be taken on one day.

Is the VKU in English recognised throughout Switzerland?

Yes — all cantonal road traffic offices in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein recognise our VKU in English. After you complete the course you can register for your car or motorcycle driving test in your canton of residence.
