Your total budget depends mainly on the number and length of your driving lessons, the courses you choose and the fees in your canton of residence. Allow for the eye test, first aid course, learner’s permit, theory test, VKU, driving lessons, practical test and WAB. Compare current offers and calculate your own budget on our price overview.
There is no fixed legal minimum number of professional driving lessons for category B. The training you need depends on your previous experience, progress and private practice. After an initial lesson, discuss an individual training plan with your instructor.

You can obtain a category B learner’s permit from age 17. The practical test is normally possible from age 18. If your permit was issued before your 20th birthday, you must have held it for at least 12 months before the test. Your accompanying driver must be at least 23, have held category B for at least 3 years and no longer hold it on probation.
A category B learner’s permit is valid for 24 months. It is issued once you pass the theory test – which you can take at the earliest one month before your 17th birthday.
From 1 January 2027 you must have attended traffic education before registering for the theory test (categories A, A1, B and B1). You can then attend the VKU at the earliest six months before the minimum age – for category B, half a year before your 17th birthday.
