Your path to a Swiss driving licence
7 steps to your driving licence – it’s that simple
1
Complete the first aid course
The first step on your way to a driving licence. The first aid course (10 hours) is mandatory and teaches you life-saving measures. The certificate is valid for 6 years.
2
Apply for a learner’s permit
With the first aid certificate, you can apply for a learner’s permit at the road traffic office. You’ll need: an eye test, a passport photo and the application form. Available from age 17.
3
Pass the theory test
The theory test covers your knowledge of traffic rules, signs and safe driving. Prepare with a learning app and register for the exam at the road traffic office.
4
Attend traffic education (VKU)
The mandatory traffic education course (8 hours) teaches you about road safety, the environment and driving physics. Available in English at DriveLab!
5
Driving lessons at the driving school
Now it gets practical! Book driving lessons through DriveLab at a driving school of your choice. On average you’ll need 25–35 lessons. Combine with private practice drives for faster progress.
6
Practical driving test
When you’re ready, your instructor will register you for the practical test. The exam takes about 45 minutes. After passing, you receive a probationary licence (3 years).
7
Complete the WAB course
Within 12 months of passing the test, you must attend the WAB course (advanced training, 7 hours). After that – and 3 years without violations – you receive your permanent driving licence.
