What is the VKU? The Verkehrskundeunterricht explained
The VKU (Verkehrskundeunterricht, “traffic-awareness lessons”) is the mandatory theory-of-traffic course on the way to your Swiss driving licence. It is required by law throughout Switzerland and recognised by every cantonal road-traffic office — wherever you complete it.
⚖️ Required by law
Mandatory for the category B (car) and A / A1 (motorcycle) licence — completed before the practical driving test.
🇨🇭 Valid across Switzerland
Recognised by every cantonal road-traffic office. You can take it in any canton, regardless of where you live, and it counts everywhere.
⏱️ 8 lessons, no exam
Four official subject areas across eight lessons on two evenings — a course, not a test: there is nothing to pass or fail.
♾️ Valid indefinitely
Since 1 January 2021 the VKU certificate no longer expires — complete it once and it stays valid for good.
