What a keeper lookup shows – and what it does not

Vehicle-registration data is generally not public in Switzerland. Art. 89g of the Swiss Road Traffic Act allows cantons to publish a vehicle keeper’s name and address only where the data has not been blocked.

Keeper is not necessarily the owner

The registered keeper may be different from the owner and from the person who was driving.

Request a block from the canton

You can request a block on public disclosure of your own data from the competent cantonal authority. The exact process is set by the canton.

No workaround for a block

A block cannot be bypassed through a public lookup. For a legitimate request, the competent authority decides what happens next.

Not a substitute for police or insurance

For an accident, safety issue or dispute, follow the official reporting routes and contact the police or your insurer where appropriate.

No result or blocked data?

A missing result does not automatically mean that something is wrong with the vehicle. Check these points first:

How do I look up a Swiss licence plate?

Read the cantonal code on the licence plate, then select it in the overview. The card takes you to the official Autoindex or cantonal portal. Charges, access rules and data blocks differ by canton.

How do I identify the canton of a Swiss licence plate?

The first one or two letters on a Swiss licence plate are the cantonal code, for example ZH for Zurich, BE for Bern or TI for Ticino. Select that code below. The canton on the plate is responsible, not your canton of residence.

Does a licence-plate lookup identify the owner or the driver?

A public lookup concerns the person or organisation registered as the vehicle keeper. That person need not be the legal owner and need not have been driving the vehicle.

Is a licence-plate lookup or Autoindex free?

Not throughout Switzerland. Charges, registration and any free lookups differ by canton, so check the guidance on the linked official service before searching.

Why is there no result for a licence plate?

Common reasons include a publication block, a deposited or expired plate, an incorrect cantonal code, or canton-specific rules for that plate type. The responsible road traffic office can explain the applicable rules.

Can I block the publication of my own keeper data?

Yes. Under Art. 89g(5) of the Swiss Road Traffic Act, a keeper can request a free, unconditional block at the competent cantonal authority. The exact process is set by the canton.

Can I obtain information about a blocked licence plate?

There is no public workaround. If you have a legitimate request, for example in connection with an accident or a proceeding, contact the competent road traffic office and follow its evidence requirements.
