Insurance and liability for the trailer

For a trailer, insurance is a matter of the towing vehicle. That is not a house rule but Swiss law – and it decides who pays when something happens.

Third-party liability: via your towing vehicle

Damage the trailer causes to others is covered by the motor liability insurance of your towing vehicle: by law, that insurance also extends to liability for damage caused by the trailer (Art. 69 para. 2 lit. a SVG). The keeper of the towing vehicle is liable for such damage (Art. 69 para. 1 SVG).

You therefore need a registered towing vehicle with valid liability insurance. Any deductible, premium increase or loss of no-claims bonus with your insurer is at your expense.

No comprehensive cover on the trailer

There is no comprehensive or partial casco insurance on the trailer itself. Damage to the trailer is therefore not covered by any casco policy from us.

Whether your own casco policy extends to a rented trailer depends on that policy. Clarify this with your insurer before renting.

The renter is liable

This also applies if an insurer first settles a third-party claim: any deductible, premium increase, loss of no-claims bonus, uninsured loss and legally permitted recourse are at your expense. Normal wear, defects recorded at handover and damage attributable to DriveLab are excluded.

Which driving licence do I need?

For this trailer you will almost always need category BE. What counts is not how much you load but the permissible gross weight.

The short calculation

The trailer alone has a gross weight of 2,700 kg. Together with any normal car the combined weight is always above 3,500 kg, so category B no longer covers it. On top of that, respect the towed load and combined weight entered in your towing vehicle’s registration document.

On the road: speed and load

Vehicle combinations are limited to 80 km/h in Switzerland (Art. 5 para. 1 lit. a VRV). On motorways and expressways 100 km/h is allowed if the towing vehicle is a light motor vehicle and the trailer’s gross weight stays below 3.5 t (Art. 5 para. 2 lit. c VRV) – which it does here at 2,700 kg.

Place heavy items over the axle, distribute the load evenly, keep a positive nose weight and secure everything against shifting.

Check the tyre pressure before you set off, too. Trailer tyres often need considerably more pressure than those of the towing vehicle, and ETRTO adds roughly another 0.2 bar for 100 km/h with a full load. Open the tyre pressure calculator

On a learner’s permit we only rent the trailer once you have taken a trailer driving lesson with us, so we know you can handle the combination safely – reversing is where it gets tricky.

Frequently asked questions about renting a trailer

Who insures the rented trailer?

Third-party liability runs through your towing vehicle. Under Art. 69 para. 2 lit. a of the Swiss Road Traffic Act (SVG), the liability insurance of the towing vehicle also covers damage caused by the trailer. You therefore need a registered towing vehicle with valid liability insurance. There is no comprehensive (casco) cover on the trailer itself.

Who is liable for damage to the trailer?

As between DriveLab and you as the renter, you are liable under the rental agreement and applicable law for damage to the trailer or load and for damage to third-party property or people caused during the rental by you or a person you allow to use it. This also applies if an insurer first settles a third-party claim: any deductible, premium increase, loss of no-claims bonus, uninsured loss and legally permitted recourse are at your expense. Normal wear, defects recorded at handover and damage attributable to DriveLab are excluded.

Which driving licence do I need for this trailer?

As a rule, category BE. What counts is not your load but the permissible gross weight: with category B you may only tow a combination whose combined permissible weight does not exceed 3,500 kg (Art. 3 VZV). This trailer alone has a gross weight of 2,700 kg, so that limit is exceeded with any normal car – you need a category BE licence.

What does renting the trailer cost?

Can I rent the trailer on a learner’s permit?

Yes, but only if you have taken a trailer driving lesson with us beforehand, so we know you can handle the combination safely. The rules for learner drives apply on top: an accompanying person holding a licence for at least three years, no probationary licence, and an “L” plate.

Is the trailer suitable for the category BE test?

Yes. It meets the requirements for a test vehicle for the practical category BE examination. If you plan to take the test with it, prepare with our instructors first: coupling and uncoupling, reversing and the traffic drive.

What do I need to watch when loading?

Stay within the 1,900 kg payload and respect the towed load and combined weight entered in your towing vehicle’s registration document. Place heavy items over the axle, distribute the load evenly, keep a positive nose weight and secure everything against shifting.

What if I return the trailer late?

Let us know as early as possible. If the trailer is already booked for the following day we cannot extend the rental. Costs incurred by other renters because of a late return are charged to you.
