Why this page helps

These points make the difference

Targeted test preparation

Plan supplementary theory and practical preparation around the categories you already hold. Clarify cantonal operating permits separately from the BPT driving test.

Practical test simulation

An agreed mock drive shows your skills in anticipation, traffic observation and vehicle control. It does not promise a fixed official test route or particular test destinations.

Local knowledge & route planning

Local knowledge helps in daily taxi work. Discuss important destinations and alternative routes; ask the responsible authority which knowledge is required for any additional local permit.

Customer competence

Courtesy, punctuality, luggage service and safe entry and exit are useful working skills. Agree with your instructor which situations you want to practise.

For whom

These situations are covered

Taxi drivers

To start as a taxi driver, clarify BPT 121 and cantonal or local taxi permits. Passing the driving test does not replace these permits.

Uber & ride-hailing drivers

For professional ride-hailing such as Uber, check BPT authorisation, vehicle approval and the requirements at your operating location separately.

Chauffeur services

Luxury transport, business shuttles, hotel trips – professional chauffeur service requires the highest standards in driving technique and customer care.

Limousine & VIP services

Limousine and VIP work requires the authorisations appropriate to the service as well as driving and customer-care skills. Clarify the transport type before starting training.

Learning content

What you will learn

Local knowledge & topography

Learning the most important destinations, roads, traffic rules and peculiarities of your canton. Map reading and navigation systems.

Customer service & care

Polite greetings, luggage assistance, safe entry and exit and professional communication: discuss these working skills alongside preparation for the actual test.

Safety rules & regulations

Working time regulations, tariff systems, insurance, accident behaviour – the legal basis for taxi operations.

Test route & simulation

Drives in varied traffic situations with specific feedback. Safe anticipation on unfamiliar roads is more useful than memorising a supposed fixed test route.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the BPT licence and how do I get it?

Code 121 records authorisation for professional passenger transport. The category B route normally involves application, medical clearance, supplementary theory and a practical test. The appropriate vehicle category and additional cantonal operating permits still apply; existing higher categories can allow test exemptions.

What are the requirements for the taxi exam?

For the category B route, Zurich specifies age 19, one year of regular driving without relevant infringements and medical clearance. Apply to your road traffic office. A criminal-record extract may be relevant to an additional local taxi permit; that is separate from BPT admission.

How long does the preparation take?

It depends on your skills, theory preparation and available appointments. Have your practical level assessed before buying a package and plan ARV 2 self-study and any local-knowledge preparation separately. A fixed number of lessons or weeks is not reliable without that information.

How much does the taxi exam cost?

The practical BPT test costs CHF 134 in Zurich or CHF 125 in Aargau (checked 20 September 2026). These are not total prices: theory, authorisation, medical examination, licence issue, materials, lessons and test-vehicle provision can add further costs. Request an itemised offer.

Do I have to take a theory test?

The ordinary category B route requires BPT supplementary theory. Prepare especially ARV 2 rules and recording equipment using current material. Certain higher categories with passed supplementary theory can allow exemptions; your road traffic office checks eligibility.

What is tested in the practical exam?

You need safe, anticipatory driving for professional passenger transport. Aargau publishes a test duration of 60 minutes. Confirm the vehicle and documents from your invitation; no fixed route, local-knowledge questions or specific customer-care task is promised here as a universal test component.

How important is local knowledge?

Local knowledge and route planning help with daily work. Ask the responsible authority whether an additional local permit requires specific evidence. The BPT driving test and local operating permits are separate processes.

What after passing the test?

Code 121 is recorded on your licence once granted. Before working, also check vehicle approval, the appropriate vehicle category and cantonal operating requirements. Zurich requires a cantonal taxi driver permit and a taxi vehicle permit.
