Why is the Solothurn road traffic office called "MFK"?
The canton of Solothurn officially names its authority "Motorfahrzeugkontrolle" (MFK) – a historically grown name. It is the same thing as the road traffic office in other cantons: responsible for driving licences, vehicle registration, exams and shipping.
Where is the MFK Bellach and when is it open?
The MFK Solothurn head office is at Gurzelenstrasse 3, 4512 Bellach. Counters are open Mon–Fri continuously from 07:00 to 16:00; phones are staffed 08:00–11:30 and 13:00–15:00. Due to construction there is a temporary customer waiting area until approx. June 2027.
Which exam sites does the MFK Solothurn operate?
Four: Bellach, Wangen bei Olten, Laufen and – since April 2025 – Dornach (Spitalweg 2, by the hospital). You choose the site yourself during online booking; the choice is binding. Dornach hosts theory tests of all categories and category B practical exams.
Is the Laufen test site really in the canton of Basel-Landschaft?
Yes – officially confirmed: the MFK test site at Wahlenstrasse 175 in Laufen is on Basel-Landschaft territory. It serves the Solothurn Schwarzbubenland; conversely, vehicle inspection slots can be swapped between Laufen and the MFP Münchenstein since February 2026.
How much does the driving exam cost in the canton of Solothurn?
Theory test CHF 30, practical exam of categories A, A1 and B CHF 120, categories BE/C/C1/D1 CHF 180. The learner permit costs CHF 60. Cancelling less than 10 working days before the slot means the full fee is due.
Can I book the practical exam myself online?
Yes – unlike many cantons, in Solothurn you book theory AND practical exams of categories A, A1, B and BE yourself via the eCari portal (log in with your person number). Rescheduling is free up to 10 working days ahead.
What is the electronic learner permit (eLFA)?
