Schaffhausen Road Traffic Office – everything under one roof in Herblingertal

Since December 2024 the Road Traffic and Shipping Office of the canton of Schaffhausen is at home in its new building at Ernst Müller-Strasse 2 in Herblingertal – the old Rosengasse address and all branch offices are closed. The new site unites counter services, theory tests, practical driving exams (including a motorcycle manoeuvring track) and the vehicle inspection hall under one roof. As the shipping authority, the office also handles boat licences on the Rhine. Here you find the address, opening hours, online services and current fees.

Where is the Schaffhausen road traffic office today – Rosengasse or Herblingertal?

Since 10 December 2024 in the new building at Ernst Müller-Strasse 2, 8207 Schaffhausen (Herblingertal). The old Rosengasse address and all former branch offices (Beringen, Ebnat, Schweizersbild) are closed – many directories still show the outdated address.

What are the opening hours of the Schaffhausen road traffic office?

Mon–Fri 08:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00. Before public holidays the office closes at 16:00. The "Vicky" voicebot answers calls outside opening hours – even in Swiss German.

Do I need an appointment for the theory test in Schaffhausen?

Yes, registration is online via iDispo. Allow up to 4 weeks between registration and your slot – register early. You can sit the basic theory at the earliest 1 month before reaching the minimum age.

How much does the driving exam cost in the canton of Schaffhausen?

Theory test CHF 30, practical car exam (cat. B) CHF 120, motorcycle exam (cat. A/A1) CHF 80 – among the lowest rates in Switzerland. The learner permit costs CHF 65. Cancelling less than 3 working days before the slot means the full fee is due.

Can Schaffhausen residents take the exam in another canton?

Yes, with a permit from the road traffic office (CHF 20) you can take your driving exam in another canton – handy if you attend driving school in Zurich or Winterthur, for example.

Is the office also responsible for boats on the Rhine?

Yes – as the road traffic AND shipping office it issues boat licences and boat permits and manages small-craft shipping on the High Rhine. The shipping, moped and plates department is in charge (+41 52 632 68 84).

What is the electronic learner permit (eLFA) in Schaffhausen?

Since November 2025, after passing the theory test you also receive an SMS link to the free eLFA in the federal swiyu app. It is valid throughout Switzerland and in Liechtenstein.

Where do I get my car inspected (MFK) in Schaffhausen?

In the vehicle inspection hall at the Herblingertal head office – with three car lanes, two motorcycle bays and truck/bus lanes. Re-inspections are possible without booking; the inspection costs CHF 60.
