Where is the Lucerne Road Traffic Office located?
The head office is at Arsenalstrasse 45, 6010 Kriens. Sursee and Emmen are test sites only (cars / motorcycles) without counter service.
How long does it take to receive the learner permit in Lucerne?
Typically 1 to 2 weeks after all documents are received (form, photo, eye-test confirmation, ID). It can take longer during holiday periods.
What does the learner permit in Lucerne cost?
CHF 50 including application processing and theory-test registration. The group theory test is CHF 30, the practical car test (cat. B) CHF 130.
Can I take my driving test in a canton other than Lucerne?
Yes in principle, but you need a "Prüfungsort-Bewilligung". The Lucerne office requires a plausible reason (weekly residence, study, work outside the canton) plus supporting documents.
How does the vehicle-permit address change work?
Within 14 days of moving you must submit the original vehicle permit with the new address (by post or at the Kriens counter). Within the canton the change costs CHF 25.
How can I secure a short-notice exam slot?
Slots can be cancelled free of charge up to 10 days before. It pays to check the viacar booking system several times a day (especially in the morning and late afternoon) for newly freed slots.
When does my probationary licence become a permanent one?
After 3 years of probation and the completed WAB refresher course – without serious traffic offences. The permanent licence is sent automatically by post; no application needed.
