The Road Traffic Office of the canton of Graubünden has its head office at Ringstrasse 2 in Chur and a branch with counter service in Samedan (Engadin). To cover Switzerland's largest canton by area, practical driving exams take place at nine locations – from Chur via Davos, Ilanz and Thusis to Roveredo, Samedan, Scuol, Müstair and Li Curt. You sit the theory test without an appointment on an "open door" basis, in German, Italian or French (basic theory also in English). Do I need an appointment for the theory test in Graubünden?

No. The theory test works on an "open door" basis with a ticket system: just show up during test hours – in Chur (Rohanstrasse 5) every Monday 15:30–16:15 and Wednesday 14:30–16:15, at the regional venues (Samedan, Davos, Ilanz, Thusis, Roveredo, Scuol, Müstair, Poschiavo) once a month. Bring your admission confirmation and ID.

In which languages can I take the exam in Graubünden?

All theory tests are available in German, Italian and French; the basic theory (car/motorcycle) also in English. Romansh is not offered as an exam language, although the office itself is trilingual (Uffizi per il traffic sin via / Ufficio della circolazione).

Where do practical driving exams take place in Graubünden?

Does the Graubünden road traffic office have a counter in the Engadin?

Yes, the Samedan branch (Cho d'Punt 53) offers the same counter hours as Chur: Mon–Thu 07:30–12:00 / 13:15–17:00, Fri until 16:00 – including vehicle inspection lanes and a theory venue.

What is the electronic learner permit (eLFA)?

Graubünden issues the learner permit electronically (federal e-ID pilot project): after applying with your mobile number you receive an SMS link. The eLFA is free and valid throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Can I deposit my GR number plates?

Yes, at any time. The insurance is deregistered automatically and road tax stops from the next day. Your number stays reserved for one year; re-registration requires an electronic insurance certificate.

May I bring my car to the inspection with summer tyres in winter?

According to the office: yes, "provided the weather permits" – a test drive must be possible in any case. In wintry conditions, winter tyres are recommended.
