MFK Basel – licensing in BS and BL, exams in Münchenstein
In both Basel, three authorities share the work: the Basel-Stadt motor vehicle office (Clarastrasse 38, part of the cantonal police) and the Basel-Landschaft motor vehicle office (Ergolzstrasse 1, Füllinsdorf) issue learner and driving licences and register vehicles. All exams – theory, practical driving exams and vehicle inspections – are run for both half-cantons by the joint Motor Vehicle Inspection Station of Both Basel (MFP) at Reinacherstrasse 40 in Münchenstein; vehicle inspections also take place in Itingen since July 2026, theory tests also in Liestal. Whether Basel-Stadt or Baselland: all exams run through the Motor Vehicle Inspection Station of Both Basel. You book your theory slot (Münchenstein or Liestal) online yourself; for the practical exam you register via web form – usual lead time 3–4 weeks.

What is the difference between MFK Basel and MFP Münchenstein?
The MFK Basel-Stadt (Clarastrasse 38) and MFK Basel-Landschaft (Füllinsdorf) are the licensing authorities: licences, vehicle registration, plates, taxes. The Motor Vehicle Inspection Station of Both Basel (MFP) in Münchenstein runs all exams of both half-cantons – theory, practical driving exams and vehicle inspections. Where do Basel residents take the driving exam?

Since when has the joint Basel test station existed?
Since 1 June 1975. The MFP is a public-law institution jointly run by BS and BL based on the 1974 agreement – it celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025. Since 1 July 2026 it also operates the Itingen site for vehicle inspections.
How do I apply for the learner permit in Basel-Stadt or Baselland?

Until when can I cancel an MFP exam?
Free of charge up to 5 working days before the slot. After that, 50% of the fee is due; no-shows pay 100%. Arriving more than 5 minutes late also risks the full fee.
Are there motorcycle exams in Basel in winter?
No, from December to February the MFP holds no practical motorcycle exams. The motorcycle manoeuvring test takes place on the MFP grounds in Münchenstein (groups of 2–3, 5 manoeuvres, about 15 minutes per person).
Where do I get my car inspected in the Basel region?
At the MFP: in Münchenstein (11 lanes) or, since July 2026, at the new Itingen site (Sägeweg 15). The periodic inspection of a car costs CHF 78; slots can be rescheduled online up to 3 working days ahead. For the Laufen district, swapping with the MFK SO site in Laufen is also possible.
How do I get keeper information for BS or BL plates?
Online via eAutoindex.ch (CHF 1 per query). For BL plates also by SMS: "BL 12345" to 939. You can block your own keeper data in both cantons via an online form.
