Motorcycle riding lessons – safe on two wheels

Switzerland has three motorcycle categories: A1, A 35 kW and A. There is no category A2 here – A2 is the EU name for the level Switzerland calls A 35 kW. You can ride A1 from age 16 (up to 125 cc and 11 kW). A 35 kW starts at 18. You get unrestricted category A after two years on A 35 kW, so from age 20 at the earliest. The former direct route from age 25 was abolished in 2021.

Prices are approx. CHF 110–150 per 90-minute lesson. This is somewhat higher than car lessons as specialised motorcycle equipment and more preparation are required.

As a beginner you need an average of 10–14 lessons (90 min each) plus the obligatory basic course. The basic course is 12 hours of practical training, split into three parts of 4 hours. All together this usually takes 2–4 months.

No. The instructors provide training motorcycles. If you later want to ride your own motorcycle, this is possible by arrangement.

The test consists of a training ground part (slalom, emergency braking, cornering) and a traffic ride in public areas. Duration: approx. 60 minutes.

Helmet, motorcycle jacket, gloves, trousers and boots with ankle protection are mandatory. Most driving schools lend equipment for lessons.

In light rain, the lesson takes place – this is important practice. In storms, snow or black ice, the lesson is postponed.

No. You can start directly with the motorcycle basic course. The Cat A learner's permit is independent of the car driving licence.
