The first-aid course (Nothelferkurs) in Switzerland: recognised nationwide and required for the learner permit

The first-aid course – the Swiss Nothelferkurs – is the first mandatory step towards your driver's licence. Anyone applying for a learner permit for the first time, whether category B (car) or A and A1 (motorcycle), must submit a valid first-aid certificate. In about 10 hours you learn the life-saving basics – from the chain of survival and the 144 emergency call to CPR with a defibrillator (BLS-AED) and wound care. The certificate is recognised throughout Switzerland and in every canton: a course taken in Zurich counts just the same in Bern, Lucerne, Aargau or St. Gallen. It is valid for 6 years and may be at most six years old when you apply for your learner permit.

Where the first-aid course fits on the road to your licence

The first-aid course is the starting point. Here is the usual sequence for category B:

    1. Take the first-aid course and an eye test – you need both for the application.
    2. Apply for the learner permit at the cantonal road-traffic office (enclose photo, ID, eye test and first-aid certificate).
    3. Pass the theory test – the learner permit is then issued.
    4. Complete the traffic-awareness course (VKU) – four double lessons, mandatory before the practical exam.
    5. Take driving lessons and prepare for the practical driving test.

First-aid course, theory test and VKU – the differences

Three mandatory building blocks that are often confused:

    Building block What When
First-aid course First-aid basics, about 10 hours Before applying for the learner permit
Theory test Computer-based test on the traffic rules After the application, to have the learner permit issued
VKU Traffic-awareness course, 4 × 2 lessons With a learner permit, before the practical exam

At DriveLab you get both mandatory courses from a single provider: the first-aid course in Zurich for CHF 128 including CHF 50 cashback for your driving school, and the VKU in Zurich. No suitable date in Zurich? We also run the first-aid course in Zug and Lucerne – the certificate is valid across all of Switzerland.

First aid or BLS-AED-SRC: which certificate fits?

For your learner permit you need the recognised driving-licence first-aid certificate. Practising resuscitation during this course does not automatically provide a separate BLS-AED-SRC certificate. A BLS attendance record alone does not replace the learner-permit first-aid certificate either. If you need first-aid training for work or education, check the required certificate and use our first aid and BLS comparison. FEDRO explains the recognition requirements for driving-licence first aid.
