Finding a driving school in Zurich means learning to drive in the busiest traffic environment in Switzerland: tram tracks crossing your lane, cyclists on your right, narrow neighbourhood streets where right-of-way applies at almost every corner, and 30 km/h zones between the main arteries. Once you can drive in Zurich, you can drive almost anywhere.
DriveLab isn't a driving school itself – it's the marketplace for verified Zurich driving instructors. Instead of comparing ten websites and chasing phone numbers, you see them all in one place – instructors with over 300 lessons already booked by learners across Zurich – and filter by what matters to you: price, rating, language and neighbourhood. Lessons start from CHF 90 (45 minutes); 90-minute lessons are around CHF 175–195 depending on the instructor. Teaching is available in German, English, Italian and Spanish – ideal for the many students and expats at ETH, the University and Zurich's international companies.
The practical driving test for the city of Zurich starts from the road traffic office (Strassenverkehrsamt) at Albisgüetli, Uetlibergstrasse 301; the theory test is taken at Albisgüetli or in Winterthur. Since 1 April 2024 the automatic restriction has been abolished – you receive a full category B licence even if you take the test in an automatic car.

Since 1 April 2024 Switzerland has abolished the automatic-only restriction: passing the practical exam on an automatic now gives you the full category B licence — you can drive automatic AND manual cars afterwards. For most learners that makes automatic the smarter choice: faster progress, fewer lessons, lower total cost and an easier exam. Manual is still available if you want, but it no longer gives you a "broader" licence.

Plan for roughly CHF 2,500–4,500 in total: learner permit application (~CHF 50), first-aid course (~CHF 120), theory exam (~CHF 30–35), traffic awareness course (VKU, ~CHF 230), 30–40 driving lessons (CHF 95.– upwards each), practical exam (~CHF 90–140 depending on canton) and the WAB second-phase course after passing (~CHF 350).
Before the practical exam: a 10-hour first-aid course and the theory exam. After passing the theory exam you must complete the traffic awareness course (VKU – 8 lessons). After you pass the practical exam, you must complete the WAB second-phase course (2 days) within the three-year probation period. DriveLab connects you with instructors and partner schools for all of these.
You can apply for the learner permit (Lernfahrausweis) for category B from age 17. The practical exam can be taken from age 18. Some cantons offer the "Begleitete Fahrausbildung" model letting you start earlier with a supervised learner.
