Driving school Hedingen is built for exactly this: five of the six driving instructors covering the town teach lessons in English, so if you have just moved here and do not want to learn Swiss traffic rules in German, you are covered. Your home or neighbourhood in Hedingen is the actual coverage area, and the meeting point for each lesson is flexible, whether that is right at your door or somewhere toward Zwillikon or Affoltern am Albis.

All six instructors drive automatic cars; a manual gearbox is not currently offered in Hedingen. Beyond English, lessons are also available in Deutsch, Español and Italiano.

  • A motorcycle specialist for category A
  • A trailer specialist for category BE
  • Theory and driving tests are handled by the Strassenverkehrsamt Kanton Zürich in Albisgüetli

Whether it is a first-aid course, the VKU traffic-awareness course, or your first driving lesson in Hedingen, your instructor comes to you.

Automatic or manual transmission in Hedingen?

Since 1 February 2019, taking the Swiss category B test in an automatic does not by itself impose an automatic-only restriction. Conditions recorded on your licence still apply. Choose your training car around your learning needs and the vehicle you expect to drive.

Automatic

  • No clutch pedal or manual gear changes while driving
  • Traffic observation, manoeuvres and safe decisions remain learning goals
  • Lesson count and total cost depend on your progress
  • Learn to control the clutch and gears safely before later driving a manual

Manual gearbox

  • Clutch control, gear selection and moving off form part of your training
  • Useful if you expect to drive a manual car regularly
  • Assess the practice you need together with your instructor
  • Compare the current vehicle, lesson length and price on the profile

Transmission choice guarantees neither an easier test nor fewer lessons. Check an older automatic-only code or any special conditions with the road traffic office. ASTRA: February 2019 change (German PDF, p. 5)

Theory & driving test: road traffic office Zurich

The theory test and the practical driving exam for Hedingen are administered by the Zurich Cantonal Road Traffic Office. Head office: Albisgüetli (head office), Uetlibergstrasse 301, 8036 Zürich. Your instructor knows the area around the exam site and practises typical exam situations with you.

Already have a foreign driving licence?

For private driving, a valid, recognised foreign licence can normally be used for 12 months after taking up residence in Switzerland. Apply for the exchange in good time: after that deadline you may not drive until it is completed. Professional driving can have earlier deadlines.

The issuing country, licence category and intended use determine the requirements. Ordinary category B licences from the UK and USA are exempt from the control drive and additional theory test, as are those from EU/EFTA countries. Other issuing countries or categories may have different requirements. Check the official country rules (Canton Zurich, in German) and confirm your case with your own canton.

In this canton the application goes to the Zurich Cantonal Road Traffic Office, Albisgüetli (head office), Uetlibergstrasse 301, 8036 Zürich.

  • Check the exchange deadline that applies to your arrival and intended driving.
  • Confirm the documents and any required tests before booking preparation.
  • If a control drive is required, discuss your preparation needs with an instructor who teaches in English.

How the control drive works · Exchanging a foreign driving licence

Learning to drive in Switzerland from scratch

If you are starting with no previous driving licence, plan the application, training and test in the right order. Existing licences or recognised certificates can change which steps apply to you.

  1. Eye test. Arrange the eyesight check required for your learner permit application with an authorised optician or doctor.
  2. First-aid course (Nothelfer). Complete the recognised ten-hour course unless an exemption applies.
  3. Apply for the Lernfahrausweis (learner permit) through your canton and follow its identity-check procedure. The normal minimum age for category B is 17.
  4. Theory exam. Check your canton's appointment procedure and available languages. The category B basic theory test has 50 questions, 45 minutes and a maximum of 15 error points.
  5. Driving lessons. Start once your learner permit is valid. Agree on learning goals and an individual lesson plan; there is no guaranteed lesson count.
  6. VKU (Verkehrskundeunterricht). Eight lessons of traffic-awareness training, mandatory before the practical exam.
  7. Practical exam. Normally from age 18. If your category B learner permit was issued before your 20th birthday, a minimum twelve-month learning period normally applies.
  8. Probationary licence. Your first licence is probationary for three years. Within the first 12 months you complete the one-day WAB second-phase training.

For lessons, choose a profile that explicitly lists English. For first aid and VKU, check the language of the actual course date. Official paperwork and test languages depend on the canton; English lessons do not guarantee an English practical test. See the step-by-step Swiss licence guide and the official learner-permit and probationary-licence rules (German).

Driving lessons in English in Hedingen

Check the languages shown on each current instructor profile and choose someone who teaches in English. Open the profile to confirm the meeting point, lesson details and available booking slots.

That matters in practice. Right of way explained at a junction while you are approaching it, a correction given in the two seconds you have to act on it, feedback after a mistake that you actually absorb — those moments depend on a shared language. It also helps with the parts that are not driving: the theory questions, the VKU evenings, and the paperwork the road traffic office expects from you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a driving lesson cost in Hedingen?

Comparable offers from the schools that cover Hedingen currently start from CHF 64 per 45 minutes of booking duration. That is a starter offer each customer can book once; repeatable offers start at CHF 74.25 per 45 minutes of booking duration. Comparison prices normalize the stated booking duration to 45 minutes; any breaks included in an offer remain included, so this is not necessarily 45 minutes of driving. Package rates require purchase of the whole package. Check the actual lesson length, payable total and any one-time administration or other mandatory charges in the offer before booking.

Which languages do driving instructors in Hedingen speak?

Driving instructors in Hedingen offer lessons in: Deutsch, English, Italiano, Français, Español. The languages spoken are listed on every instructor profile.

Automatic or manual: which is better in Hedingen?

Choose the transmission to suit your learning needs and the car you expect to drive. Since 1 February 2019, taking the Swiss category B test in an automatic does not by itself restrict your licence to automatic cars. Any restrictions recorded on your licence, including those for health reasons, still apply. Before driving a manual car independently, learn to control its clutch and gears safely. The transmission alone does not guarantee fewer lessons, a lower total cost or an easier test.

Which licence categories are available in Hedingen?

In Hedingen DriveLab offers driving lessons for: Car (Cat. B), Trailer (Cat. BE), Motorcycle (Cat. A). Each instructor profile shows the categories they teach.

How do I book a driving lesson in Hedingen?

Pick an instructor from the list above, open the profile and choose an open slot. Booking is confirmed instantly online — no phone tag, no waiting.

How many driving lessons do I need to pass the test in Hedingen?

The number depends on your starting level, learning pace and opportunities for supervised private practice. Test readiness matters: you need to control the car safely, apply the rules and handle traffic independently. Ask your instructor to assess your current skills and agree on the next learning goals. A first assessment is a planning aid, not a guaranteed lesson count or test result.

How much does the full driving licence cost in Hedingen?

There is no fixed total. Budget for the eye test, learner permit and licence issuance, the first-aid course where required, preparation for the theory exam and its fee, the VKU, driving lessons and private practice, the practical test and any test-vehicle costs. Add the WAB second-phase course if you receive a probationary licence. The lowest verified repeatable comparison price for this selection is CHF 74.25 per 45 minutes of booking duration. Use the actual regular offer and package commitment for your budget; included breaks and any additional charges still apply. One-time starter offers cannot be used for every lesson. Course prices and official fees must be checked separately; the number of lessons remains individual.

Which mandatory courses do I have to take?

For a first category B licence, the usual 2026 route is: a 10-hour first-aid course before the learner-permit application, the theory exam, then an issued learner permit and the 8-hour VKU before the practical test. Existing licence categories or recognised qualifications may exempt you from individual requirements. If you receive a probationary licence, complete the WAB second-phase course (7 hours on one day) within 12 months of issuance. From 1 January 2027 the VKU must be completed before the basic theory exam. Check which requirements apply to your existing licence and planned exam date.

How old do I have to be to start learning to drive in Switzerland?

The regular minimum age for a category B learner permit is 17 throughout Switzerland; the practical test is normally available from age 18. If the learner permit is issued before your 20th birthday, you normally need to hold it for at least 12 months before the practical test. Accompanied car practice starts only once the learner permit is valid. Specific vocational-training exceptions do not create a general cantonal right to start car lessons below 17.

Can I reschedule or cancel my lesson?

The rescheduling options, cancellation deadline and any charges depend on the terms agreed for your booking. Check the instructor or school profile, booking confirmation and applicable conditions before booking. If you need a change, use the contact or cancellation method specified there and contact the provider promptly. Do not assume that every lesson can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts.

Can I drive on my foreign licence while I learn?

With a valid, recognised foreign licence for the relevant category, you can normally drive privately during the first 12 months after taking up residence in Switzerland. Apply for the exchange in good time; after the deadline you may not drive until the exchange is completed. A control drive is not required for every non-EU/EFTA licence: category B licences from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan are also exempt. The issuing country, licence category and intended use determine the requirements; professional driving can have earlier exchange deadlines. Check the official country rules (Zurich, in German) and the road traffic office in your canton.

Can I learn to drive in Hedingen entirely in English?

Choose an instructor whose profile explicitly lists English. For first aid and VKU, check that the actual course date is advertised in English. The languages available for official applications, theory exams and practical tests depend on the canton; English lessons do not guarantee an English practical test. Zurich, for example, conducts the practical driving test in German. Confirm the official requirements and discuss test instructions with your instructor before booking.

Do I need a Swiss residence permit before I start?

Apply through the procedure specified by the road traffic office in your canton of residence. Check its current document list and identity-verification steps; these can involve your commune or a cantonal office. Before driving as a learner, you must have a valid learner permit. If you already hold a foreign licence, clarify the exchange route first rather than assuming you must start the whole training process again.

Does passing in an automatic restrict my licence?

Taking the Swiss category B test in an automatic has not, by itself, led to an automatic-only restriction since 1 February 2019. Conditions already recorded on your licence, including health-related restrictions, still matter; ask the road traffic office about removing an older code 78. Learn to use the clutch and gears safely before driving a manual independently. Choose your training vehicle around your needs, without assuming a guaranteed saving in lessons or costs.

How long does the whole process take?

Your learning progress, the required steps and available appointments determine the timeline. If your category B learner permit is issued before age 20, the usual minimum learner period is 12 months before the practical test. From age 20 this particular waiting period does not apply, but you still need to meet the requirements and be ready to drive safely. Agree on a realistic plan with your instructor and check course and test availability; there is no guaranteed completion time.
