There is no fixed school address to drive to with the driving school Beromünster network: four driving instructors cover Beromünster and the surrounding area, so your home or neighbourhood is effectively the service area. The meeting point for your driving lessons is flexible, whether that is right at your door, near Gunzwil, or towards Neudorf.

All four instructors teach in automatic cars only; there is currently no manual-gearbox option in this area. Lesson languages vary by instructor and can include German, English, French, Italian, and Turkish, so it is worth checking availability with your instructor before booking if you have a specific language preference.

The first-aid course (Nothelferkurs), the traffic-awareness course (VKU), and the theory exam are arranged separately from your lessons. Exams and licensing for Beromünster fall under the Strassenverkehrsamt Kanton Luzern, headquartered in Kriens. This setup lets you build a driving-lesson schedule around your own routine in Beromünster rather than around a school's location.

Automatic or manual transmission in Beromunster?

Since 1 February 2019 Switzerland has abolished the automatic-only restriction: you get the full category B licence either way.

Manual gearbox

  • More lessons required — clutch, gear changes and hill starts take practice
  • Higher total cost due to extra driving lessons
  • Harder exam — more potential mistakes
  • Same licence as automatic — no additional benefit

Tip: after passing the automatic exam, you can still learn manual any time later — no extra exam required.

Theory & driving test: road traffic office Lucerne

The theory test and the practical driving exam for Beromunster are administered by the Lucerne Cantonal Road Traffic Office. Head office: Head office Kriens, Arsenalstrasse 45, 6010 Kriens. Your instructor knows the area around the exam site and practises typical exam situations with you.

Already have a foreign driving licence?

You may keep driving on a foreign licence for 12 months after you take up residence in Switzerland. Once that year is over it no longer entitles you to drive here, so start the exchange early rather than in the last few weeks.

What the exchange involves depends on where your licence was issued. A licence from an EU or EFTA country is exchanged directly: no control drive and no theory exam. A licence from a third country — the USA, the UK since Brexit, and most others — requires a Kontrollfahrt, the official control drive with a cantonal examiner. If your licence comes from a country on neither of the federal ASTRA lists, you also have to sit the full theory exam.

In this canton the application goes to the Lucerne Cantonal Road Traffic Office, Head office Kriens, Arsenalstrasse 45, 6010 Kriens.

  • Count your 12 months from the day you registered as a resident, not from your first visit.
  • Check which list your issuing country is on — that decides whether a control drive applies.
  • If a control drive applies, book a few preparation lessons first with an instructor who teaches in English and knows the local roads.

Learning to drive in Switzerland from scratch

If you have never held a licence, Switzerland puts several fixed steps between you and the practical exam. None is difficult on its own, but they happen in order and some of them book out weeks ahead.

  1. Eye test. Any optician can do it in a few minutes. The result goes with your learner permit application.
  2. First-aid course (Nothelfer). Ten hours. You need the certificate before you apply for the learner permit.
  3. Apply for the Lernfahrausweis (learner permit) at the commune where you are registered. Category B is open from age 17. The forms are in German.
  4. Theory exam. Computer-based at the road traffic office: 50 questions, 45 minutes, a maximum of 15 error points. It can be sat in English.
  5. Driving lessons. You can start once the learner permit arrives. Plan for 30–40 lessons.
  6. VKU (Verkehrskundeunterricht). Eight lessons of traffic-awareness training, mandatory before the practical exam.
  7. Practical exam. From age 18.
  8. Probationary licence. Your first licence is probationary for three years. Within the first 12 months you complete the one-day WAB second-phase training.

Which steps work in English: the theory exam, the VKU and every driving lesson with an English-speaking instructor. The commune paperwork is in German, and the first-aid course is usually taught in German unless you find an English date.

Driving lessons in English in Beromunster

Check the languages shown on each current instructor profile and choose someone who teaches in English. Open the profile to confirm the meeting point, lesson details and available booking slots.

That matters in practice. Right of way explained at a junction while you are approaching it, a correction given in the two seconds you have to act on it, feedback after a mistake that you actually absorb — those moments depend on a shared language. It also helps with the parts that are not driving: the theory questions, the VKU evenings, and the paperwork the road traffic office expects from you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a driving lesson cost in Beromunster?

The schools that cover Beromunster currently start from CHF 59.– per 45-minute lesson. That is a starter offer each customer can book once; regular, repeatable lessons start at CHF 77.– per 45-minute lesson. Prices are shown per 45 minutes of driving time so schools selling 45-, 60- or 90-minute lessons stay comparable; the exact lesson lengths and prices are on every instructor profile.

Which languages do driving instructors in Beromunster speak?

Driving instructors in Beromunster offer lessons in: Deutsch, English, Italiano, Français, Türkisch, Español. The languages spoken are listed on every instructor profile.

Automatic or manual: which is better in Beromunster?

Choose the transmission to suit your learning needs and the car you expect to drive. Since 1 February 2019, taking the Swiss category B test in an automatic does not by itself restrict your licence to automatic cars. Any restrictions recorded on your licence, including those for health reasons, still apply. Before driving a manual car independently, learn to control its clutch and gears safely. The transmission alone does not guarantee fewer lessons, a lower total cost or an easier test.

Which licence categories are available in Beromunster?

In Beromunster DriveLab offers driving lessons for: Car (Cat. B), Motorcycle (Cat. A), Trailer (Cat. BE). Each instructor profile shows the categories they teach.

How do I book a driving lesson in Beromunster?

Pick an instructor from the list above, open the profile and choose an open slot. Booking is confirmed instantly online — no phone tag, no waiting.

How many driving lessons do I need to pass the test in Beromunster?

The number depends on your starting level, learning pace and opportunities for supervised private practice. Test readiness matters: you need to control the car safely, apply the rules and handle traffic independently. Ask your instructor to assess your current skills and agree on the next learning goals. A first assessment is a planning aid, not a guaranteed lesson count or test result.

How much does the full driving licence cost in Beromunster?

There is no fixed total. Budget for the eye test, learner permit and licence issuance, the first-aid course where required, preparation for the theory exam and its fee, the VKU, driving lessons and private practice, the practical test and any test-vehicle costs. Add the WAB second-phase course if you receive a probationary licence. For a provisional lesson budget, the planning rate used here is CHF 77 per 45 minutes: it uses an available repeatable comparison price or a provisional platform rate. One-time starter offers cannot be used for every lesson. Check the actual lesson length, current regular price and additional charges on the profile before calculating your budget. Course prices and official fees must be checked separately; the number of lessons remains individual.

Which mandatory courses do I have to take?

For a first category B licence, the usual 2026 route is: a 10-hour first-aid course before the learner-permit application, the theory exam, then an issued learner permit and the 8-hour VKU before the practical test. Existing licence categories or recognised qualifications may exempt you from individual requirements. If you receive a probationary licence, complete the WAB second-phase course (7 hours on one day) within 12 months of issuance. From 1 January 2027 the VKU must be completed before the basic theory exam. Check which requirements apply to your existing licence and planned exam date.

How old do I have to be to start learning to drive in Switzerland?

The regular minimum age for a category B learner permit is 17 throughout Switzerland; the practical test is normally available from age 18. If the learner permit is issued before your 20th birthday, you normally need to hold it for at least 12 months before the practical test. Accompanied car practice starts only once the learner permit is valid. Specific vocational-training exceptions do not create a general cantonal right to start car lessons below 17.

Can I reschedule or cancel my lesson?

The rescheduling options, cancellation deadline and any charges depend on the terms agreed for your booking. Check the instructor or school profile, booking confirmation and applicable conditions before booking. If you need a change, use the contact or cancellation method specified there and contact the provider promptly. Do not assume that every lesson can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before it starts.

Can I drive on my foreign licence while I learn?

With a valid, recognised foreign licence for the relevant category, you can normally drive privately during the first 12 months after taking up residence in Switzerland. Apply for the exchange in good time; after the deadline you may not drive until the exchange is completed. A control drive is not required for every non-EU/EFTA licence: category B licences from countries such as the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Japan are also exempt. The issuing country, licence category and intended use determine the requirements; professional driving can have earlier exchange deadlines. Check the official country rules (Zurich, in German) and the road traffic office in your canton.

Can I learn to drive in Beromunster entirely in English?

Choose an instructor whose profile explicitly lists English. For first aid and VKU, check that the actual course date is advertised in English. The languages available for official applications, theory exams and practical tests depend on the canton; English lessons do not guarantee an English practical test. Zurich, for example, conducts the practical driving test in German. Confirm the official requirements and discuss test instructions with your instructor before booking.

Do I need a Swiss residence permit before I start?

Apply through the procedure specified by the road traffic office in your canton of residence. Check its current document list and identity-verification steps; these can involve your commune or a cantonal office. Before driving as a learner, you must have a valid learner permit. If you already hold a foreign licence, clarify the exchange route first rather than assuming you must start the whole training process again.

Does passing in an automatic restrict my licence?

Taking the Swiss category B test in an automatic has not, by itself, led to an automatic-only restriction since 1 February 2019. Conditions already recorded on your licence, including health-related restrictions, still matter; ask the road traffic office about removing an older code 78. Learn to use the clutch and gears safely before driving a manual independently. Choose your training vehicle around your needs, without assuming a guaranteed saving in lessons or costs.

How long does the whole process take?

Your learning progress, the required steps and available appointments determine the timeline. If your category B learner permit is issued before age 20, the usual minimum learner period is 12 months before the practical test. From age 20 this particular waiting period does not apply, but you still need to meet the requirements and be ready to drive safely. Agree on a realistic plan with your instructor and check course and test availability; there is no guaranteed completion time.
