FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is driving anxiety and how does it manifest?

Driving anxiety can manifest as a racing heart, sweating, trembling or simply overwhelming discomfort while driving. It often arises after an accident, a long break or through negative experiences. Some people avoid certain situations such as motorways or narrow streets.

Can driving anxiety really be overcome?

Targeted practice can help rebuild routine and confidence. How your uncertainty develops is individual; success cannot be promised. Discuss distressing symptoms with a suitable medical or psychological professional. Driving lessons do not replace treatment.

How many lessons do I need for driving anxiety?

This depends on your current driving practice, the situations you find difficult and your goals. Start with an assessment and agree on manageable exercises. Review what you can already do safely and where more support would help; a fixed lesson count cannot be guaranteed.

How does a lesson against driving anxiety differ from a normal lesson?

The instructor proceeds much more slowly, explains every step and gives you control over when you are ready for the next challenge. There is no pressure to perform. The goal is trust, not speed.

Do I need my own car?

No. Most instructors provide a vehicle with dual pedals and additional mirrors. However, some learners feel safer in their own car later on – this is also possible.

How much does a lesson for driving anxiety cost?

Use the current prices and terms of your chosen instructor. Compare lesson duration and included services, and clarify any surcharges, insurance and cancellation terms before booking. A profile price alone does not establish your total budget.

Are there also female instructors for driving anxiety?

Yes. At DriveLab you will also find female instructors who specialise in driving anxiety. Many female learners feel particularly comfortable with a woman. You can filter specifically for female instructors.

Can I also practise individual situations?

Yes, that is exactly what a targeted lesson is for. Whether motorway, parking, night driving or narrow mountain roads – you decide what you want to work on.

Driving again after a long break in Switzerland: plan your refresher

If you have not driven for years, start with your current ability and the journeys you want to make. A long break can leave you out of practice without meaning you have driving anxiety. Tell the instructor whether you want a practical refresher, support with specific fears, or both. There is no reliable fixed number of lessons for every returning driver.

Before the first drive: check your entitlement and vehicle

Check the validity, categories and restrictions on your licence before practising. If you moved to Switzerland with a foreign licence, the exchange rules and the 12-month driving limit are a separate issue from a refresher course. If your entitlement is unclear, ask your cantonal road traffic office first. Lessons do not restore a suspended or expired entitlement. Check the foreign-licence exchange guide.

Say when you last drove regularly, which side of the road you used, whether you drove manual or automatic, and which car you expect to use now. Discuss whether the first lesson will use the instructor’s car or another approved arrangement. Familiarise yourself with the actual car’s controls, mirrors, assistance systems and parking brake before joining traffic.

A refresher plan built around everyday journeys
StepWhat to practise and review
AssessAgree on a manageable starting setting. Check observation, speed choice, lane position, priorities and vehicle control with the instructor.
Build routineChoose specific tasks such as junctions, roundabouts, parking or merging. Review which can be handled independently and which still need prompts.
Apply itPractise a relevant everyday journey, such as your commute or shopping route. Add more demanding traffic, motorway driving or darkness only when appropriate.
ReviewAgree on the next practice goal and how to judge progress. Feeling more comfortable matters alongside safe observation and decisions.

Book an assessment with a useful brief

For example: “I hold [licence/category], last drove regularly in [year/country] and want to drive [journey]. I am comfortable with [task] but uncertain about [situation]. Can we arrange a refresher assessment, and what are the lesson duration, vehicle and full price?” This is an enquiry template, not a promise of a particular provider’s availability.

After the assessment, ask for a short plan before buying a package. Compare prices using the same lesson duration and clarify vehicle, insurance and cancellation terms. Keep the existing exercises on this page as options; choose those that match your needs. Find an instructor by location and profile. English speakers can also practise with our German driving commands with audio.

Editorial check: 20 September 2026. The practice sequence is a planning suggestion. For foreign-licence entitlement, see the official Canton Zurich guidance; your issuing documents and competent authority determine your case.
