Why this page helps

These points make the difference

Targeted test preparation

We know the requirements of the cantonal Road Traffic Offices and specifically prepare you for the control drive.

Check requirements first

Whether a control drive is required depends on the issuing country and licence category. Check with the Road Traffic Office in your canton.

Possible with your own car

Agree lessons in your own car with the driving school first, including insurance, vehicle requirements and price. The official control drive follows your canton’s vehicle rules; Zurich recommends using the driving school car.

Plan the exchange in time

The authority issues your Swiss licence after the procedure is completed successfully. Processing, any required checks, preparation and available control drive appointments determine the timing. Apply well before your entitlement to drive expires.

For whom

These situations are covered

EU/EFTA driving licences

Valid German, Austrian and French licences are generally exchanged without a control drive or additional theory test. The issued licence and your circumstances matter. To continue driving in Switzerland after 12 months, you need the Swiss licence.

Licences from other countries

Zurich lists US, Canadian and Australian category B licences (private car use) as exempt from the control drive and additional theory test. Confirm your exchange requirements with the responsible Road Traffic Office.

British licences

Great Britain appears on Zurich’s list with no control drive or additional theory test. Check your exchange requirements with the responsible Road Traffic Office.

Returners

After a driving break, voluntary refresher lessons help you practise Swiss rules and driving skills, including as an older driver. An official control drive requires an authority’s order, for example for an exchange or concerns about driving competence; an ordinary lesson does not replace it.

Learning content

What you will learn

Swiss traffic rules

Right-of-way rules, roundabouts, speed limits, pedestrian crossings – the differences between your home country and Switzerland are systematically repeated.

Right-of-way rules & roundabouts

Priority to the right, entering and exiting roundabouts, bicycle priority – typical test situations that we specifically practise.

Motorway & country roads

Safe overtaking, merging, 120 km/h, vignette – the peculiarities of Swiss long-distance traffic.

Parking & manoeuvring

Parallel parking, reversing, turning manoeuvres – repeatable techniques that are required in the test.

Facts

Important facts at a glance

12 months

From arrival generally applies to private driving. After that, you may not continue driving in Switzerland until the exchange is complete. Certain professional driving requires the Swiss licence before the first trip.

1 attempt

A failed control drive cannot be repeated. Your canton’s appointment notice specifies the procedure and reserved time; a preparation lesson is a separate appointment.

Official fees

Application processing, licence issue and any control drive follow cantonal tariffs. Bern example, checked on 22 September 2026: exchange CHF 120, plus CHF 132 for a category B control drive.

Lesson price

Compare the price and minutes in the actual offer. Preparation lessons, test car, accompaniment and official fees are separate costs. A discount applies only when explicitly confirmed for your booking.

2

Submit to the Road Traffic Office

Go with the completed form, passport photo, foreign driving licence and residence permit to the residents' office or Road Traffic Office.

3

Receive decision

The authority checks your documents and tells you whether an exchange without a test is possible or a control drive or additional theory is required. Check your driving entitlement and deadline in the decision; processing time is not fixed.

4

Prepare and coordinate the official appointment

Book an assessment and targeted preparation lessons as needed. Arrange the actual control drive according to the canton’s notice. Agree the vehicle, accompaniment and return journey with your driving school in advance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a control drive for licence exchange?

The official control drive checks your knowledge of traffic rules and safe handling of a vehicle in your category. For licence exchange, the issuing country and licence categories are key factors. The Road Traffic Office conducts it; a booked preparation lesson with a driving school is not the official control drive.

Who has to do a control drive?

Your canton decides based on your licence and circumstances. Licences from EU/EFTA states and several other countries are generally exempt; professional and higher categories may need other tests. After generally 12 months from arrival, continuing to drive in Switzerland requires the Swiss licence. Missing the deadline does not allow you to keep driving.

How does the control drive work?

A traffic examiner accompanies you and assesses road behaviour and vehicle control. Practise urban roads, country roads, motorways, parking and manoeuvres appropriate to your category. This does not guarantee a particular route or a nationwide fixed duration; the notice specifies the meeting point, time, language and documents. In St. Gallen, the control drive is conducted in German.

Can I drive my own car for the control drive?

Check with the responsible office first. The test vehicle must match the category, be roadworthy and meet the canton’s registration requirements; bring the required original documents. Zurich explicitly recommends the driving school car. Lessons in your own car also require the school’s agreement. Arrange a licensed accompanying driver for a possible return journey.

What happens if I fail the control drive?

A failed control drive cannot be repeated. Your foreign licence will no longer be recognised for driving in Switzerland. Ask the Road Traffic Office about obtaining a licence through the regular learner and test process.

How many preparation lessons do I need?

Start with an assessment. Experience, a driving break, Swiss priority rules, observation and independent decisions determine the practice needed. Then agree specific learning goals and a schedule with the school. A fixed number of lessons guarantees neither readiness nor passing.

How much does the entire exchange cost?

Add the eye test and photo, your canton’s application and licence fees, any control drive or additional theory, and preparation. Bern example on 22 September 2026: CHF 120 for exchange and CHF 132 for a category B control drive. Lessons, test car and accompaniment are extra according to your agreement. Compare the offer’s minutes, package conditions and explicitly confirmed discounts too.

How long does the entire process take?

It depends on complete documents, any translation or medical check, office processing, your preparation and available appointments. Apply early and follow every deadline in the decision. Driving lessons and the official control drive are arranged separately; a lesson package does not promise a particular exchange date.

Is a refresher lesson for older drivers the same thing?

A voluntary refresher drive is tuition, for example after a break or when feeling unsure. An official control drive is an authority-ordered assessment with legal consequences. It can be ordered for reasons other than exchange too. Show the driving school any official notice so it can plan the appropriate preparation.
