Aquaplaning starts before total loss of control

The critical moment starts when tyres can no longer displace water. Signs include light steering, changing noise, spray, ruts or water plumes from vehicles ahead.

Prevention works better than reaction

Reduce speed early, keep much more distance and avoid deep ruts when it is safe. If you only react once the car floats, there is little reserve left.

When it happens: ease off and stabilise straight ahead

Keep the steering wheel calm in the direction of travel, ease off the accelerator and avoid abrupt braking or steering. With automatic cars, do not panic-shift; keep the vehicle stable and let speed reduce.

Tyres are safety reserve

Tread depth, tyre pressure and tyre age affect wet-road behaviour. The legal minimum is not automatically a comfortable safety margin. Before longer rainy drives, check tyres consciously.
